Spend some quality time in West Columbia this Christmas

West Columbia, SC 11/30/2021 (Paul Kirby) – The City of West Columbia recently announced all of the wonderful things it will have to see and do in the city this year as Christmas approaches. Each year the program organizes many family events and all open to the community. It’s a wonderful time to bring your whole family to renew old friendships and forge new ones in the city that has made a name for itself on the western banks of the Congaree.

First of all, a new mailbox has appeared in the city! Santa’s Mailbox is located at Carraway Park, 212 Hudson Street, West Columbia, South Carolina, 29169.

Children can drop their letters to Santa Claus in the special mailbox by December 15, 2021, for a response by Christmas. The mailbox will accept letters until December 24, however, if a letter is placed in the box after December 15, a response from Santa may not arrive in time until Christmas Day. All information is available on www.westcolumbiasc.gov/santasmailbox.

Santa Claus chooses two letters, stamped no later than December 1, which will be read by Mrs. Claus during the city’s annual Christmas tree illumination on December 3 at 6:30 p.m. at West Town Hall Columbia. Include a parent’s email address and Santa’s elves will let you know if your child’s letter will be read during the tree lighting event. Be sure to include the child’s name, age and address. Parents, help toddlers make their information readable.

To help with writing the letter, the city offered some helpful tips for parents or caregivers:

  • To save paper, write on the back of your child’s letter. If you keep them together, your child will also be able to remember what he wrote.

  • When responding as Santa, make Santa’s letter as personal as possible by highlighting your child’s accomplishments over the past year. For example, helping out at home, getting good grades in a particular subject at school, or participating in community service activities. Make it special by fulfilling your child’s wish list or including information about your family, pets, or Elf on the Shelf.

  • It’s a great vacation activity that the whole family can enjoy, including parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and other caregivers.

This week, the City of West Columbia is hosting the 17th Annual Christmas Tree Lighting. It will be held this Friday, December 3, 2021 at 6:30 p.m. at West Columbia City Hall, 200 N. 12th Street, West Columbia, SC.

Each year elementary schools in the West Columbia area host a “What Christmas Means to Me” contest. The winners of the essays from each school are recognized by the tree lighting and will read their winning essays or poems. In addition to the writing competition, there is a student art competition. The winning artwork will be featured on the cover of the event program. The first three entries will be posted on the Art on State wall at the corner of State and Meeting streets.

The program will include Christmas carols, greetings and lighting from the West Columbia Christmas tree.

Entertainment includes:
