SECWAC Hosts “A Beginner’s Guide to America” with Roya Hakakian, Wednesday; Presence offered in person or via Zoom
OLD LYME – Southeast Connecticut World Affairs Council (SECWAC) welcomes Roya Hakakian, author and founding member of the Iranian Center for Human Rights Documentation, speaking on “A Beginner’s Guide to America” on Wednesday October 6 at 6 p.m. She will discuss the immigrant experience in America and the importance of immigrants to this country.
With people’s comfort and safety in mind, this and many subsequent programs will be offered as hybrid events – both in person and available through Zoom.
This event offers limited in-person attendance at the First Congregational Church of Old Lyme. Registration is required; attendance in person is first come, first served.
Masks will be required at the in-person event, and there will be no appetizers before the meeting.

Hakakian’s subject, “A Beginner’s Guide to America,” is based on his book of the same name. His book will be available at Bank Square Books during the meeting or is sold online (free delivery).
She will talk about the importance of the United States
Hakakian is the author of two collections of poetry in Persian and of numerous essays and articles in leading publications, including the New York Times, Washington Post and NPR.
She is a founding member of the Iranian Center for Human Rights Documentation and was a member of the Woodrow Wilson Center for International Scholars.
She is the recipient of the Guggenheim Fellowship for Non-Fiction for her book, Turquoise Palace Assassins.
His thesis, Travel from the land of no, about coming of age as a Jewish girl in post-revolutionary Iran received She Magazine Readers’ Choice Award. His latest book is called A Beginner’s Guide to America: For Immigrants and the Curious.
