Kadance Nickmeyer is a busy 11th grader at Matanzas High School. She was in Jacksonville this weekend to host a Women of Distinction event with over 2,000 people in attendance. She recently won the Girl Scouts Gold Award for creating a domestic violence website, which is the highest achievement you can receive and is equivalent to an Eagle Scout. And on April 21, she got to ride with Sheriff Rick Staly.
“I don’t know how she does all this. I thought I was working long hours,” Staly said.
Nickmeyer won the day with the sheriff by winning an essay contest. In her essay, she wrote about how important it is for officers to have good relationships with the residents of the neighborhoods in which they work.
She and Staly started the day at Flagler Palm Coast High School, where they presented Great Kids awards. In the aftermath, they joined deputies in monitoring a stolen car and joined in the arrest of the driver. After spending the morning traveling to two other schools and helping with the stolen car and a quick lunch, it was time to meet the deputies and the SWAT team for a briefing on the drug raid. Staly and his team raided a house in Bunnell, eventually finding trafficked amounts of fentanyl, various pills, and heroin. Nickmeyer said it was by far the most exciting part of her day.
After a successful raid, it was time to head to the District 2 office in Palm Coast to reward the volunteers with presidential awards for their volunteerism. Afterwards, they returned to the Justice Center to see the newest batch of Flagler County Sheriff’s Office employees sworn in and a retirement celebration.
Nickmeyer then met with local media at the end of her day before leaving to take her mother, who was recently diagnosed with breast cancer, on a date.
“Kadance really does it all,” Staly said. “She’s a very mature child. I don’t know if I’ve ever met someone her age who has her life completely planned out. I’m thrilled to have her in our community and can’t wait to see what what she will do in life. She will continue to do great things.”
Nickmeyer plays basketball, swims and runs on the track. After graduation, she wants to be a fighter pilot in the Air Force.
This was the first year of the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office “Win a Day with the Sheriff” contest. Staly is looking forward to doing the same contest next year.
