Janet Jackson will perform in Louisville for the first show since the pandemic

What does pop icon Janet Jackson love most about spending Kentucky Derby weekend in Louisville?

It’s not the thoroughbreds, the fashion, or the pageantry of the historical event. It’s something even better.

It’s you.

“It’s always been the people of Louisville. You’ve always been so sweet and kind,” Jackson told the Courier Journal. “And it’s so nice, especially when I’m away from home and on tour and tired. It’s always nice to have that wellness love at home. It’s something that I always had here in Kentucky.”

The multiple Grammy winner and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee (she also received Oscar and Golden Globe nominations for her musical contributions to film) will perform on Kentucky Derby night, at Lynn Family Stadium, 350 Adams St.

Jackson promises a sizzling, high-energy show that will be the first full-scale concert held at the football stadium and the Billboard-top entertainer’s first gig since the pandemic.

“It’s been three years and we’re so excited,” the superstar said. “We are delighted to be able to start playing again and to be able to start here.”

New edition

The concert will also bring the six original members of New Edition – Bobby Brown, Johnny Gill, Ralph Tresvant, Michael Bivins, Ronnie Devoe and Ricky Bell – to Louisville. Jackson and the six members of New Edition are set to be guests at the illustrious Barnstable Brown Derby Eve Gala held Friday night in the Highlands neighborhood of Louisville.

So how does the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, with four decades of material to choose from, create the setlist for her first comeback gig with a live audience since 2020?

“It was hard, but it was fun. I prepared the setlist and gave it to the musical director and he said ‘you want to do everything these songs? “, Jackson said. “I work hard to make sure that there is a good flow in the show and that I give the public something of all that, of all my work.

Launching his first live show in three years has meant almost zero downtime for Jackson and his team since arriving in Louisville.

“There’s work to do until the morning of the concert,” she said. “We rehearse, review the show, make changes. It’s a lot of work and it’s quite long hours.”

Of course, we asked for a preview of a few songs from Jackson’s setlist, but she kindly declined.

“It’s no secret but I’d rather you wait and see on Saturday night.”

Fair enough. After a years-long hiatus caused by a pandemic, this question is a bit like asking a magician to reveal her tricks before the show.

To find out for yourself what’s on pop icon Janet Jackson’s Louisville Derby nighttime concert setlist, tickets to the concert are currently on sale starting at $115.

And if you’re lucky enough to snag a concert ticket, you might want to watch Jackson’s highly acclaimed documentary before the show. The pop icon says it’s the real-life story of her famous family and how they built a career that her audience will experience as part of this weekend at Lynn Family Stadium.

The four-hour documentary “Janet Jackson” premiered on Lifetime and A&E earlier this year and was a ratings hit for the network. The doc was also cable’s best nonfiction debut since ESPN/ESPN2’s “The Last Dance.”

“I wanted people to know the real story of my family,” Jackson said. “It’s important to me to tell the real story and not let someone else try to tell my the story and get it wrong later down the line.”
